Abbott and Costello

October 8, 1942 – June 18, 1949 · 339 broadcasts

The Abbott and Costello Program brought America's top comedy team to the air throughout the 1940s. Bud Abbott, the fast-talking straight man, and Lou Costello, the round innocent with the panicked 'Heyyy Abbott!,' had already made 'Who's on First?' a national catchphrase on the Kate Smith Hour before launching their own weekly half-hour -- on NBC from 1942 to 1947, then ABC from 1947 to 1949. The early seasons were a parade of marquee movie guests -- Marlene Dietrich, Cary Grant, Lucille Ball, Frank Sinatra, Charles Laughton and dozens more -- each dropped into the boys' latest scheme; later seasons leaned on a stock company (announcer Ken Niles, utility man Mr. Kitzel, sound-effects wizard Mel Blanc) and running gags built around Lou's money, his relatives, his hopeless romances, and the job-of-the-week. Fast, broad, and built on verbal crosstalk, it remains one of radio comedy's defining variety shows. The catalog carries a broad run of surviving broadcasts, most with a plot drawn from the canonical OTR log.

The Story
