Tarzan

September 12, 1932 – June 27, 1953 · 535 broadcasts

Tarzan swung onto American radio in 1932 and stayed for two decades across three distinct productions. The original "Tarzan of the Apes" (1932-34) was a landmark: a 15-minute daily cliffhanger cut to disc and shipped to stations nationwide -- one of the first great syndicated serials -- starring silent-film Tarzan James Pierce opposite Joan Burroughs, creator Edgar Rice Burroughs's own daughter, as Jane, with Burroughs revising the scripts himself. Its ensemble was a who's-who of early radio (Gale Gordon, Frank Nelson, Hanley Stafford, Jeanette Nolan), and a Signal Oil youth club drew 125,000 members in its first year. Carlton KaDell took over the title role for the mid-1930s jungle serials "Tarzan and the Diamond of Asher" and "Tarzan and the Fires of Tohr," lost-world adventures of dinosaurs, talking gorillas and forbidden cities. After a long silence the ape-man returned in "Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle" (1951-53), a half-hour Commodore Productions revival carried on CBS with Lamont Johnson -- later a two-time Emmy-winning director -- as Tarzan. This catalog folds all three productions into one spine; per-episode synopses are shown where a free source documents the plot.

The Story
