Tales of the Texas Rangers

April 13, 1950 – September 14, 1952 · 96 broadcasts

Tales of the Texas Rangers (NBC, 1950-1952) is a half-hour Western crime docudrama that reimagined the storied Texas Rangers as a modern police force. Film star Joel McCrea plays Ranger Jace Pearson, who cracks contemporary cases -- almost always murders -- with up-to-date scientific detection and dogged legwork rather than a fast draw, aided when the trail turns rural by his horse Charcoal. Every episode dramatizes a case adapted from the actual files of the Texas Department of Public Safety, with legendary Ranger Captain M. T. "Lone Wolf" Gonzaullas as technical advisor and producer-director Stacy Keach Sr. steering the documentary approach. In spirit it is Jack Webb's Dragnet given a Lone Star accent -- procedural realism carried across the breadth of Texas. The result was popular enough to move to television from 1955 to 1958. The NBC run of 96 broadcasts drew on a deep bench of Hollywood radio talent -- William Conrad, Parley Baer, Paul Frees, Virginia Gregg, Tony Barrett and many more -- behind McCrea's steady lead.
