Space Patrol

October 4, 1952 – March 19, 1955 · 129 broadcasts

Space Patrol was one of the great juvenile space operas of the early 1950s, racing through the 30th century with Commander Buzz Corry of the United Planets and his eager young sidekick Cadet Happy. The radio version aired on ABC from October 4, 1952 to March 19, 1955 -- 129 episodes -- running side by side with the famous television show as a true dual-media phenomenon, sponsored by Ralston-Purina. Remarkably, the same cast performed in both media, and the writers, scripts, and directors were shared between them. Ed Kemmer -- a real WWII fighter pilot and POW -- starred as Buzz Corry, with Lyn Osborn as Cadet Happy, Virginia Hewitt as Carol Carlisle, Ken Mayer as Major Robertson, Nina Bara as Tonga, and Bela Kovacs as the recurring villain Prince Baccarratti. The franchise was created and produced by Mike Moser, with Norman Jolley as chief writer for both versions. Here is the lovely twist: because radio wasn't bound by physical TV sets, the audio adventures were actually grander in scope than what the cameras could show -- the rockets flew farther, the worlds loomed larger, all in the listener's imagination. Some TV villains, Prince Baccarratti among them, made the jump to the radio dial too.
