The Roy Rogers Show

November 21, 1944 – July 21, 1955 · 348 broadcasts

Roy Rogers rode into radio in November 1944, the singing "King of the Cowboys" playing himself out of the Double R Bar Ranch. In its early Mutual years the half-hour leaned on music and campfire banter, built around Roy, his wife Dale Evans -- the "Queen of the West" -- and the close harmonies of Bob Nolan's Sons of the Pioneers (later Foy Willing and the Riders of the Purple Sage). Gabby Hayes, and afterward Pat Brady, filled the comic seat. When the show jumped to NBC in October 1951 it hardened into a Western thriller, pitting Roy against rustlers, counterfeiters, claim-jumpers and smugglers across Paradise Valley -- and always closing, in duet with Dale, on her own song "Happy Trails." Because Rogers' film and personal-appearance schedule left no room for live broadcasts, the series was among the first recorded on transcription disc, and it aired on more than 500 stations until 1955. Roughly a quarter of the about 348 documented broadcasts survive as recordings; the rest are logged here for completeness.

The Story
