Ranger Bill

October 2, 1950 – May 16, 1962 · 141 broadcasts

Ranger Bill was a Christian youth adventure serial from Moody Radio, the broadcasting arm of Chicago's Moody Bible Institute, first heard on WMBI on October 2, 1950 and syndicated in reruns for decades afterward. Set in the mountain town of Knotty Pine high in the Rockies, it followed chief forest ranger Bill Jefferson and his friends through outdoor adventures that always carried a gentle moral lesson for young listeners. Miron Canaday starred as Ranger Bill and cleverly doubled as the crusty old-timer Stumpy Jenkins; Ed Ronne Sr. played Gray Wolf, a Dakota tribesman at home in both modern forest management and traditional ways, and Roger Compton played Bill's teenage ward, Henry Scott. The show began in 15-minute installments and grew to a full half hour in 1954. Produced entirely inside a religious-broadcasting institution rather than the network-and-sponsor world of commercial radio, Ranger Bill stands a little apart from the old-time-radio mainstream -- and outlasted most of it, still circulating today in its syndicated half-hour form across a documented run of 214 episodes.
