The Pacific Story

July 11, 1943 – January 26, 1947 · 169 broadcasts

NBC's wartime documentary of the Pacific rim, heard from July 1943 to January 1947. Created by NBC public-affairs man Jennings Pierce with Stanford's Inez Richardson and shaped by consultant Owen Lattimore -- Roosevelt's adviser to Chiang Kai-shek -- each week took up a single country, people, or question of the Pacific and told it as a "drama/documentary": a narrated, lightly dramatized story followed, in many programs, by an expert's commentary. Its premise was that with Europe in ruins the Pacific might become the center of the postwar world, and Americans "should know something about it." Producer-writer-director Arnold Marquis ran the series across its 184 weeks; Gayne Whitman -- radio's Chandu the Magician -- narrated, over music by Charles Dant and later Thomas Peluso and Henry Russell, with a Hollywood repertory of radio players. Guest authorities ranged from Lattimore and Time-Life's Henry Luce to Nobel novelist Pearl S. Buck and a rotating roster of scholars. The result is a contemporary radio chronicle of Asia and the Pacific at war and at the dawn of the atomic age.
