The Amazing Mr. Malone

January 11, 1947 – July 13, 1951 · 180 broadcasts

The Amazing Mr. Malone brings Craig Rice's John J. Malone to the air -- a rumpled, hard-drinking Chicago criminal lawyer who would rather crack a case than try one. Where Perry Mason lived in the courtroom, Malone works the streets, talking and needling his way to the evidence that clears whichever luckless client the week's murder has landed in the frame. Based on the best-selling novels of Craig Rice -- the pen name of Georgiana Ann Randolph Craig, who outsold most of her hard-boiled male rivals -- the show ran on ABC from 1947 to 1950 and returned for a summer on NBC in 1951, the title role passing from Frank Lovejoy to Gene Raymond to George Petrie. Most weeks take a proverb for a title -- Haste Maketh Waste, Handsome Is as Handsome Does -- and let Malone turn the platitude inside out. Thirteen broadcasts survive of a run once nearly two hundred strong.
