Mr. and Mrs. North

December 30, 1942 – April 18, 1955 · 618 broadcasts

New York publisher Jerry North and his scatterbrained-but-sharp wife Pam could not buy a chest at auction, take a vacation, or mail a letter at midnight without turning up a corpse -- and Pam, forever three steps ahead of the professionals, usually reasoned out the killer while the police were still dusting for prints. Adapted from Frances and Richard Lockridge's New Yorker sketches and best-selling novels, the series brought its light, wisecracking blend of murder and married banter to the air on December 30, 1942, opening NBC's powerful Wednesday night lineup for Woodbury Soap. Alice Frost and Joseph Curtin, both seasoned soap-opera actors, played the Norths for the first eleven years; when the show moved to Hollywood in 1953, Barbara Britton and Richard Denning -- stars of the concurrent television version -- stepped into the roles. A ratings mainstay that reached nearly twenty million listeners and won the first Best Radio Drama Edgar Award in 1946, Mr. and Mrs. North ran on NBC and then CBS until April 18, 1955, the amiable married-sleuth counterpart to The Thin Man's Nick and Nora Charles.

The Story
