The Line Up

May 27, 1950 – February 18, 1953 · 134 broadcasts

The Line-Up was CBS radio's San Francisco answer to Dragnet -- a lean, documentary-styled police drama that ran from July 1950 to February 1953. Each half-hour opened on the daily station-house line-up, where suspects were marched out under the lights to be identified by number, name, and charge; from that parade the soft-spoken Lieutenant Ben Guthrie (Bill Johnstone, radio's second Shadow) would pick up a thread and follow it, procedure by procedure, to a solution. Beside him stood the line-up sergeant -- Wally Maher, then Jack Moyles after Maher's death -- and, unusually, those were the only continuing characters. Producer-directors Elliott Lewis and Jaime del Valle rode with real police and sat in on actual line-ups to keep the cases believable, though (unlike Dragnet) the stories were fiction, written by a sharp room that included a young Blake Edwards. Mostly sustaining and shuffled around the CBS schedule, the show was popular enough to spawn a long-running CBS television series (1954-1960), a 1958 Don Siegel film, and the San Francisco Beat syndication package.

The Story
