The Phil Harris - Alice Faye Show

September 29, 1946 – June 18, 1954 · 297 broadcasts

The Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show was a sitcom built on a real marriage: bandleader Phil Harris and movie-musical star Alice Faye played fictionalized versions of themselves as a show-business couple raising two daughters in a madcap household. The comedy ran on Harris's brash bandleader bluster against Faye's grounded, warm straight-woman -- one of the era's definitive "stars play themselves" sitcoms, alongside Jack Benny and Burns & Allen. It grew out of The Fitch Bandwagon, where the couple became breakout stars before the variety show was retooled into a full situation comedy, running on NBC from October 3, 1948 to 1954. The ensemble was deep: Elliott Lewis as the guitarist Frank Remley, Walter Tetley as the malevolent grocery boy Julius (Tetley was simultaneously Leroy on The Great Gildersleeve), Gale Gordon as Phil's exasperated boss Mr. Scott, and a young Sheldon Leonard as a thug. Two of its writers, Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher, went on to create Leave It to Beaver and The Munsters. When sponsor RCA replaced Rexall, the swap was written into the plot -- Mr. Scott fired by one and hired by the other. Phil Harris is credited as a pioneer of radio situation comedy, and both leads carried major legacies beyond the microphone: Harris later voiced Baloo and Thomas O'Malley for Disney, while Faye remains linked forever to the Oscar-winning standard "You'll Never Know."

The Story
