The Green Hornet

February 27, 1936 – December 5, 1952 · 1056 broadcasts

One of radio's best-known juvenile adventure serials, The Green Hornet launched from Detroit's WXYZ in 1936 and ran, through Mutual, NBC Blue, and ABC, into 1952. By day Britt Reid was the debonair young publisher of the Daily Sentinel; by night, with his valet Kato and the super-powered car the Black Beauty, he was the masked Green Hornet. The brilliant twist: police and public believed the Hornet was himself a criminal, and Reid used that cover to infiltrate the underworld and leave the real crooks for the law. It came from George W. Trendle and writer Fran Striker -- the team behind The Lone Ranger -- and shared a bloodline with that show, since Britt Reid was written as the Lone Ranger's grandnephew. The series was famous for its classical music: Rimsky-Korsakov's "Flight of the Bumblebee" blended with a theremin hornet buzz for the theme, and Berlioz, Tchaikovsky, and Stravinsky underscoring the elaborate Black Beauty garage set-piece. Future newsman Mike Wallace was once an announcer; Fred Foy, voice of "Hi-Yo Silver," closed the run. The Hornet became a foundational masked-vigilante template, spawning two 1940s movie serials, comics, and the 1960s TV series that gave Bruce Lee his first adult role as Kato -- a WXYZ pillar whose franchise stays licensed to this day.

The Story
