Father Knows Best

August 25, 1949 – March 25, 1954 · 199 broadcasts

Father Knows Best began on NBC radio on August 25, 1949, four years before it became one of television's most beloved family sitcoms -- and the radio original is a sharper, funnier animal than the warm show it spawned. Robert Young stars as Jim Anderson, a General Insurance agent raising three children in the Midwestern town of Springfield with his wife Margaret (June Whitley, and later Jean Vander Pyl, the future voice of Wilma Flintstone). Where the television Jim was gentle and wise, the radio Jim is sardonic and quick with a barb, presiding over a household of broadly drawn kids: status-seeking Betty (Rhoda Williams), literal-minded Bud (Ted Donaldson) and pesky little Kathy (Norma Jean Nilsson). Creator Ed James wrote more than a hundred scripts of everyday domestic comedy -- Christmas bills, a skunk won in a raffle, a live raffle turkey, a mink coat kept 'for safekeeping.' Young disliked the joke-first radio format enough to rebuild the entire concept, and cast, for television -- which makes these broadcasts a fascinating record of the property before it became an American institution. He was the only performer to make the jump.
