Family Theater

February 13, 1947 – September 11, 1957 · 542 broadcasts

A star-studded inspirational anthology unlike anything else on the air, Family Theater ran on the Mutual network from 1947 to 1957, hosted by Father Patrick Peyton and built around his famous motto, "The family that prays together stays together." Peyton, a Congregation of Holy Cross priest, had begun a local rosary broadcast in Albany in 1943; from it grew a nationwide crusade that made him one of the true pioneers of mass-media evangelism. The show's defining feature was unprecedented: carried as sustaining public-service time with no commercial sponsor, it ran a full decade on donated talent -- and the talent was Hollywood's biggest. James Stewart, Bing Crosby, Gregory Peck, Irene Dunne, Loretta Young, Jimmy Durante, Lucille Ball, Raymond Burr and scores more appeared for free, week after week, for the cause rather than a paycheck. The nonsectarian stories ranged from original moral dramas to lavish adaptations of Moby-Dick, A Tale of Two Cities, Don Quixote and the classics, with music by Meredith Willson, later of The Music Man. Heard across the United States and around the world, Family Theater remains a remarkable record of Hollywood's star power lent to a purpose rather than a product.

The Story
