Dimension X

April 8, 1950 – September 29, 1951 · 50 broadcasts

Dimension X was NBC's pioneering adult science-fiction anthology, on the air from April 1950 to September 1951. Where earlier radio SF meant the juvenile heroics of Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon, Dimension X took the genre seriously -- buying the published work of the era's best writers (Ray Bradbury, Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Kurt Vonnegut, Jack Williamson, Robert Bloch, Murray Leinster) and rounding it out with sharp original scripts by staff writers Ernest Kinoy and George Lefferts. Norman Rose narrated, opening each half hour with the words 'Adventures in time and space... told in future tense.' Made on a shoestring but beloved by the NBC staff who produced it, the series was among the first network programs committed to magnetic tape. Fifty broadcasts carried 46 stories -- automated houses, generation ships, first contact, computers that know too much -- that still count among the best science fiction radio ever aired. Its scripts and cast carried straight into its longer-lived successor, X Minus One (1955-1958).
