Counterspy

May 18, 1942 – November 29, 1957 · 73 broadcasts

"Washington... calling Counterspy..." Over a clatter of Morse code, David Harding answered the call for fifteen years as chief of the United States Counterspies -- a fictional federal agency invented by producer Phillips H. Lord so he could dramatize the spy game without clearing his scripts with J. Edgar Hoover. Don MacLaughlin, once called "the most American voice on the air," played Harding across the entire run, with Mandel Kramer as his aide Peters. Premiering on the NBC Blue Network in May 1942 and retitled David Harding, Counter Spy in 1946, the show tracked the anxieties of its age: wartime episodes hunt Gestapo saboteurs and Black Dragon agents, postwar episodes chase Soviet-bloc defector-killers, atomic thieves, and communist blackmail rings, and later cases turn to hijackers, counterfeiters, and narcotics. It ran until November 1957 and reached the movies twice in 1950. Along the way a sitting Vice President and a real-life FBI counterspy both stepped up to the microphone. This collection gathers the surviving broadcasts, 1942-1953.
