Claybourne is a 1998 New Zealand radio serial that blends science fiction, supernatural thriller, and soap opera. Thompson, an American drifting through the country's far north after a bad breakup, is asked by his employer -- the communications giant Koestler Industries -- to look into a 'problem' at their remote satellite station. What he finds is a small township full of secrets: the suspicious death of a Koestler behavioural psychologist, the Te Whenua o Te Irirangi people and their kaumatua Mata, a bartender named Karen, and undercurrents of tapu, conspiracy, an unexplained death rate, and rumours of dragons.
Made by Pronoun Productions (Andrew Dubber and Belinda Todd) with New Zealand On Air funding, and written by and starring Jim McLarty and William Davis, Claybourne aired on Newstalk ZB four days a week in five-minute installments -- an addictive, cliff-to-cliff serial that was 'deliberately and proudly New Zealand in its language, humour and accent' and consciously cinematic in its sound design. It won Best Dramatic Production at the 1999 New Zealand Radio Awards. The 96 surviving episodes are one complete story arc of a planned two; funding ended the show on a cliffhanger. Released later under a Creative Commons licence, it became one of the most popular spoken-word programmes on MP3.com and found a second life as a podcast.
This is a continuing serial and no per-episode plot text survives in the free record, so the catalog carries the full titled run in story order without invented synopses.
