Challenge of the Yukon

When WXYZ Detroit -- the studio behind The Lone Ranger and The Green Hornet -- went looking for a third great adventure serial, owner George W. Trendle asked for something new: a show with a dog as the hero. The result, first heard January 3, 1939, was a Northern adventure set in the Klondike Gold Rush, following Sergeant William Preston of the North-West Mounted Police and his lead sled dog Yukon King as they ran lawbreakers to ground. Its catch-cries -- "On, King! On, you huskies!" and "Well, King, this case is closed" -- are pure WXYZ house style. The series was created and originally written by Tom Dougall, with Fran Striker's WXYZ shop (Mildred Merrill, Betty Joyce and others) later filling out the scripts, and the title role passed through several voices: Jay Michael in the early years, then former movie actor Paul Sutton, and briefly Brace Beemer -- radio's Lone Ranger himself -- who stepped in during 1954 when the Ranger ended. Yukon King's barks, whines, and howls were supplied first by sound man Dewey Cole, then actor Ted Johnstone. Its theme is often said to draw on Emil von Reznicek's "Donna Diana" overture. The series moved from local WXYZ to ABC (1947-49) to Mutual, and in September 1950 took the title most listeners remember: Sergeant Preston of the Yukon. As the third great WXYZ adventure serial, it spawned a television series and comic books -- and proved Trendle right that, sometimes, the dog really is the star.

When WXYZ Detroit -- the studio behind The Lone Ranger and The Green Hornet -- went looking for a third great adventure serial, owner George W. Trendle asked for something new: a show with a dog as the hero. The result, first heard January 3, 1939, was a Northern adventure set in the Klondike Gold Rush, following Sergeant William Preston of the North-West Mounted Police and his lead sled dog Yukon King as they ran lawbreakers to ground. Its catch-cries -- "On, King! On, you huskies!" and "Well, King, this case is closed" -- are pure WXYZ house style. The series was created and originally written by Tom Dougall, with Fran Striker's WXYZ shop (Mildred Merrill, Betty Joyce and others) later filling out the scripts, and the title role passed through several voices: Jay Michael in the early years, then former movie actor Paul Sutton, and briefly Brace Beemer -- radio's Lone Ranger himself -- who stepped in during 1954 when the Ranger ended. Yukon King's barks, whines, and howls were supplied first by sound man Dewey Cole, then actor Ted Johnstone. Its theme is often said to draw on Emil von Reznicek's "Donna Diana" overture. The series moved from local WXYZ to ABC (1947-49) to Mutual, and in September 1950 took the title most listeners remember: Sergeant Preston of the Yukon. As the third great WXYZ adventure serial, it spawned a television series and comic books -- and proved Trendle right that, sometimes, the dog really is the star.
