Alka-Seltzer Time

October 9, 1953 – November 6, 1953 · 19 broadcasts

Alka-Seltzer Time was a 15-minute weekday song session sponsored by Alka-Seltzer, starring baritone Curt Massey and singer Martha Tilton -- "The Liltin' Miss Tilton," once Benny Goodman's star vocalist. Backed by Country Washburne's orchestra and pianist Charlie LaVere, with announcer Fort Pearson handling the sponsor's jingles, the two stars ran through the popular tunes and novelty numbers of the day. The program began in 1949 as Curt Massey Time and was retitled to spotlight its sponsor by 1952, airing on both Mutual and CBS. Not to be confused with the earlier Alka-Seltzer Time hosted by Hoosier humorist Herb Shriner (1948-49), which was renamed Herb Shriner Time -- Shriner had no part in this Massey and Tilton run. The 19 broadcasts here are a continuous four-week stretch from October and November 1953, each catalogued by the song that opened it.
