21st Precinct

July 7, 1953 – November 1, 1956 · 159 broadcasts

21st Precinct brought documentary-style realism to CBS radio from 1953 to 1956, dramatizing the daily grind of a fictional Manhattan police station "from the patrolman's point of view." Produced in cooperation with the New York Patrolmen's Benevolent Association and adapted from real case files, it followed the work of the station through its commanding captain, who narrated every case. Where most crime radio chased gunfights, 21st Precinct deliberately leaned into the human and the mundane -- a biting dog that will not be surrendered for rabies observation, a false-alarm addict, a widow on a window ledge -- finding its drama in procedure, judgment, and the people a squad meets on an ordinary shift. Created by the Gangbusters team of producer John Ives and writer-director Stanley Niss, the show wore its debt to Dragnet openly; Variety praised it as "an exciting show" while noting the resemblance. Its most distinctive feature was that the lead was a role, not a star: the precinct captain's chair changed hands twice across the run, played in turn by Everett Sloane (Capt. Kennelly), James Gregory (Capt. Cronin), and Les Damon (Capt. Keough), with Ken Lynch, Harold J. Stone, and Santos Ortega as the standing squad.
